Well, during the civil war in the US, Britain was actually considering helping the Confederates in the war, but after the Battle of Antietam between the North and the Confederates, the British had decided not to interfere to help the Confederates. Reason why? At first they thought the Confederates were going to win the war easily, and at the battle of Antiteam, if General Lee(Confederates) was able to seize the power there, the British would have easily stepped in; But seeing the progress of the North in the battle of Antietam, they stepped back and just wanted to see where it would go from there.
